#Where to Start This post is all about giving you a quick introduction to the Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth 3, an awesome game that has been hailed as one of the best Fantasy RTS games ever. The popular game is back with a rockin' new campaign. Since its initial release in 2003, it has been updated frequently and is now the most recent title in this genre. The game features one of the most detailed battle systems for an RTS ever, with each unit having multiple attributes. The game has great fast-paced action, but once you're through the first few missions game's game play becomes pretty slow. Also, there are only 5 playable races (humans, elves, dwarves and orcs), no other factions or races. As a huge fan of this sort of game, I was really looking forward to the addition of Minas Morgul and new enemy races!
The main new feature is the inclusion of multiplayer which allows for 4 players to compete online via LAN or internet connection. A host can also set up games with up to 15 players on one computer with no lag time! Very nice. Also a new feature is a start map for multiplayer where the players can place their units on the map. This helps set up skirmishes and can also be used as a single player map. One of the best features is that it's basically Free. They have added all sorts of new content, such as an entire campaign to play, new units and spells, new interface, multiplayer maps and all kinds of other stuff!!
The hard core gamer may be disappointed with this version however. The single player campaign comprises only 5 missions from the original game's 14 missions. The skirmish mode from the first game is gone with no replacement. Also, you can't remove or edit existing structures.... you can only add new ones. That's a real bummer when you're working with a limited number of units. Additional thoughts on the game:
